Wear United FC 1 - 4 Penshaw CC FC

Away | 08 October 2017

United took on Penshaw for the second week in a row hoping to get revenge for defeat last week but with a depleted side it wasn’t going to be easy. United put in a great shift but unfortunately came away again with nothing

United changed to a 4-1-4-1 formation for this game due to the personnel available with several regulars unavailable due to work, illness and injury so only 12 players were available for this game

The first chance of the game fell after 5 minutes and it was for Penshaw with a long range effort which should have been easy for Carl Lee but it bounced up just in front of him and Carl fumbled it for a corner which came to nothing

The second chance of the game brought the first goal when the Penshaw winger broke down the right and into the box and then hit the ball hard past Carl Lee and into the goal. 1-0 to Penshaw

Penshaw had another chance on 18 minutes when the ball was played into the box and a shot came in from 10 yards but Carl Lee got across to make a superb diving save

United’s first chance fell a minute later when Michael Walters freed Leo Burke down the right and after a couple of touches Leo shot but it went narrowly wide and over past the right hand post

United could and should have been level on 23 minutes. Richie Morton swung in a free kick and it fell to Joe Walters who had a shot blocked by the defender. The ball came back to Chris Pike who also had his shot blocked before the ball ricocheted to Steve Walls and his poke towards goal was cleared off the line

3 minutes later and Michael Walters won the ball on the left with a great tackle. Michael cut inside and went past two players before unleashing a right footed shot low towards the bottom corner but the keeper was equal to it with a good diving save and Leo Burke put the follow up wide

Just after the half hour and Penshaw should have extended their lead. The Penshaw player twisted and turned past 3 United defenders in the box and shot but Matty Colborn recovered well to block the shot for a corner. The corner came in but keeper Carl Lee met it with a punch and United cleared.

It was 2-0 to Penshaw a minute later though when a ball in from the right was missed by a couple of United defenders and was coolly slotted into the bottom corner giving Carl Lee no chance. 2-0 to Penshaw

United made a change on 33 minutes with only substitute and match reporter Michael Smith coming on to replace Leo Burke who was suffering from dizzy spells

Half Time – Penshaw CC FC 2-0 Wear United FC

Leo Burke came back on at half time to replace Michael Smith to revert back to how United started the first half

Within seconds of the restart Penshaw played a through ball between the United central defenders but thankfully the shot from the edge of the box under pressure from Matty Colborn went wide of the goal

2 minutes into the second half and United had another chance when a ball was played into Steve Walls’ feet. He took a touch before unleashing a curling effort from 25 yards but the keeper managed to get across to catch the ball

Penshaw put a long range effort well wide on 53 minutes and 3 minutes later Steve Walls crossed from the left deep to the back post which Richie Morton tried to guide in with his head but it went wide for a goal kick

On 59 minutes Michael Walters played a lovely crossfield ball to Richie Morton who controlled the ball well before unleashing a goalbound effort but the keeper managed to keep it out by tipping it over the bar

Penshaw tried a speculative effort on 63 minutes when a cross from the left was met with an overhead kick but the ball went wide of the far post

Chris Pike had to come off after 65 minutes due to a back injury so Michael Smith again returned to the action for United

On 70 minutes Penshaw made it 3-0 but United pulled 1 back on 74 minutes when Michael Walters played a lovely ball into Steve Walls who controlled with his chest and finished on the half volley under pressure from a defender and the onrushing goalkeeper. 3-1

Penshaw got their 4th goal with 8 minutes remaining when they broke into the box and tried to play the ball across goal from the right. Matty Colborn tried to stop the cross but could only manage to divert the ball past a helpless Carl Lee.
